Textiles Construct Project: Contextual Research

Clouds: Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec.
I have recently come across two designers Ronan & Bouroullec who's particular pieces of work titled 'Clouds' really appeals to me, the image above shows one of the pieces from the cloud collection, i like how this 3D piece looks like it has been sewn or stitched along the black folded lines and feel i could adapt this look to one of my constructed samples.

Clouds.

These small scale pieces from Ronan & Bouroullec's cloud collection made me think about how my textiles samples could be twisted separately and then clustered together to create a cloud formation, much like these pieces above have been clustered and folded together to create each cloud design.

Textiles: Final Tropical Forest Prints

I looked through my portfolio filled with my collection of possible Tropical Forest prints and edits and chose two final print designs, i then applied these final chosen prints to a piece of clothing to allow myself and viewers to visualise what my prints would look like on an actual garment.

Tropicsl Forest Print: First Choice.

Tropical Forest Print: Second Choice.

Textiles: Final Electric Neon Prints

After looking through my portfolio of electric neon prints and photoshop edits i picked two final designs to represent my electric neon line, i then applied these two final designs onto a piece of clothing giving myself and viewers a visual of how my prints would look on an actual garment.

Electric Neon Print: First Choice.
Electric Neon Print: Second Choice.

Original Print.
At the last minute i looked back at this print photographed above and decided to add it to my short list of designs for my Electric Neon collection, i loved how the direct dyes were streaked across the fabric like an in motion photograph of city lights, however i decided i did not want to edit this print using photoshop as i felt it was best presented in its original state.

I decided to add these electric bolt print designs to my short list for my Electric Neon collection, however when using photoshop on these designs the edits were not as strong and on point as the originals and so i came to the conclusion to stick to these original prints designs.

This print above has been selected as part of my short list of designs for my Tropical Forest collection, i have used photoshop tools and effects to alter my design slightly creating other possible print designs pictured below.

Ceramics: Final Piece

Final Piece.
Side View of Final Piece.
I rearranged my ceramic forms into one of my original sketch ideas as shown in my photographs above, i like how this piece is simplistic but still allows my forms to dangle and cluster together producing shadows on the body which is what i was aiming for, for these reasons i have decided to stick to this design as my official final piece.

Ceramics: Positioning

Piece Five.
I rearranged my ceramic forms into another of my sketch designs, this piece created more shadows on the body as there is more forms draped and dangling, however i think i could make this design slightly better.

Piece Six.
I have combined the idea of a necklace and shoulder piece within this designs, although i am not that keen on this design i do like the draped shoulder piece as it allows the forms to flow nicely.

Textiles: Editing

Original Print.
I originally created this print intending it to be part of my electric neon themed designs however i felt the leaf background represented my Tropical Forest theme better and chose to add it to my short list of Tropical Forest themed prints, i decided to edit this print slightly using photoshop to produce varied possible designs for my collection.

1st Edit.
Using photoshop i edited my original design by enhancing the colours including the hue and saturation producing this first edit.

2nd Edit.
I again edited the colours of my original print, for this second edit i chose to use warm reds and oranges to represent the heat from a tropical forest.

Textiles: Editing

Original Print.
I have selected the print above as a possible Electric Neon design, however i have used photoshop to edit this original design to create other possible prints for my collection.

Edit.
Using multiple photoshop tools i edited my original print creating this new powerful and louder design, i feel this print has more of an explosive look which i feel would represents my electric neon collection very well.

Textiles: Editing

Original Print.
I have selected the print above as a possible Tropical Forest themed design, i have used photoshop to edit this design slightly and to create a few more possible prints for my collection.

1st Edit.
I used neon and colour alteration tools within photoshop to create my first edited print, i like how the orange and pink colours work together i also feel this design is reminiscent of a tropical animal print.

2nd Edit.
I decided to alter the colours slightly for my second edit however i kept the tones vibrant.

Ceramics: Positioning

Piece Three.
Using my sketch ideas as a guide i have rearranged my forms to create these two shoulder pieces, i like this design as it is almost like a jewellery jacket however i don't think this design is as prominent as i would like it to be.

Piece Four.

I again rearranged my ceramic forms and created this double layer necklace, i like the simplicity of this design and also how the second drape of this necklace allows the forms to slightly cluster together.

Ceramics: Positioning

Once my ceramic forms had been covered in my white slip they were placed into the kiln to be fired, once this process had been completed i pierced each one with a metal hoop and began to link them together using my design sketches as a guide.

Piece One.
This first piece is a simple necklace design taken from the beginning of my sketch ideas, i like how simplistic and fresh this design looks on the body.

Piece Two.
This shoulder design is also taken from my original sketch ideas, i like the way this design falls as i feel the clustered effect is something i am aiming for within my final piece.

Textiles: Editing

Original Print.
I have chosen this original print above to be a possible design used within my Electric Neon themed collection, i have used photoshop to again edit this print and create a number of other possible designs.

1st Edit

2nd Edit.
I used a number of effects and tools to produce my first edit, i liked the style of the wiry drawn lines created in my first edit and decided to play around slightly with the background colour creating my second edit.

3rd Edit.
I edited my original design one final time creating the print shown above, i am pleased with my final edit as the black background makes the neon coloured lines stand out, the neon, fuzzy lines created on this print almost remind me of static found on a television screen and i feel that over all this print would represent my electric neon theme very well.

Textiles: Editing

Original Print.
This print above was chosen as a possible Tropical Forest design, i have used photoshop to edit my original design and create alternative prints.

1st Edit.
My first edit was created by changing the hues an saturation of the colours in my original print, i was impressed by my first edit as it immediately reminded me of a tropical forest theme, i again edited this print by swapping the position of the colours around creating a second edit.

Textiles: Editing

Original.
I chose this print above as a possible design to be used within my Electric Neon themed collection, i have used photoshop to edit this print and have produced a few new print designs shown below.

1st Edit.
I really liked the effects produced when using the smudge tools and felt this edited design reminded me of a cubist painting.

2nd Edit.
This second edit was created using multiple effects including colour alterations, i feel that this design represents my electric neon theme very well from the vibrant colours to the imagery, i felt this design did not need to be edited any further as i was satisfied with its outcome.

Textiles: Editing

Original Print.
I previously chose the print pictured above as a possible Tropical Forest print, i have used photoshop to edit this print a number of times and i have now produced a collection of possible alternative designs.

1st Edit.
To produce this first edit i played around with the colours hue and saturation, i like the colours produced on the print as a feel they represent the word tropical really well.

2nd Edit.
I carried on changing my first edited print and used a smudge tool to slightly blend my prints colours together, the results of this are shown in my second edit above.

3rd Edit.
I again edited my original using a charcoal effect and created this third design, i feel this design looks slightly like germs or cells being seen under a microscope.

4th Edit.
I used a number of effects including chalk to produce this fourth design, however i feel this edit is too dark to be used as part of my Tropical Forest collection.

5th Edit.
For my fifth and final edit i used neon effects, i see a connection between this print and my ceramic designs as this print reminds me of cloud formations, however i don't feel this neon effect is appropriate for my Tropical Forest collection.

Ceramics: White Slip

Applying White Slip.
I initially envisioned my ceramic forms being a crisp white colour and decided the best way to create this look would be to create a white slip. When looking through a ceramic book containing recipes i found a page which showed me the ingredients used to create a simple white slip, i followed the recipe and created the slip which i then had to apply to all my ceramic forms, my slip had to be applied using a soft brush so that no brush marks would be left on my forms when they are eventually fired.

Textiles: Chosen Prints

When looking at my experiments and prints i have produced over the past few months i feel i have collected a sufficient amount of possible designs which could be used for both my chosen themes, i have now narrowed down all my designs and i have chosen five possible Tropical Forest themed prints and five possible Electric Neon themed prints as shown below, i now plan to use photoshop techniques to edit each one of these prints and possibly push them further creating better looking designs than the originals.
